Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know - About Cities Around the USA!

Arcadia's series "Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know" is awesome! After I read the six titles I was sent, I let my niece read them, and then we read them together, and she agreed: "Aunt Jane, now I want to go to these places and see this stuff for real!" I agreed. Even cities I'd already seen took on new wonder, after I read these simple little books.

I read "Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know" about Buffalo, NY; Charleston, SC; Orlando, FL; Atlanta, GA;, and Cincinnati, OH.

Each book had 48 pages and 70 color photographs, and each page was laid out in a very easy and interesting way, making it fun for Stephanie and me to read and point things out to each other.

The books are suggested for readers age 7 - 11, but seriously, I think anyone of any age would enjoy learning about the various cities in our country.

Each book is $9.99.

I am seriously considering putting together a trivia competition at school, based on the information in these books. I think they're perfect for such things, at home or at school. Homeschoolers, especially, might be interested in this series.

The Day Leo Said "I Hate You"

I was especially interested in this book because of my nieces and nephews; it will soon be Christmas and I love to give the gift of books. I was already familiar with the author, Robie H. Harris, and am a fan of her book It's Perfectly Normal, so I approached this new book already smiling.

When I finished reading the book, I was still smiling.  It's just simply lovely.  I can't wait to read it to my little nieces and nephews!

Here is the release, and every word of it is true.  I know.  I've got the book on my lap as I type!

The moment those dreaded words - "I hate you! - pop out of a young child's mouth, almost every child wishes they had never been said.  In The Day Leo Said, "I Hate You!" I want to add something else:  this book was, of course, written with very young children in mind, to soothe them when they utter words of hate and frustration that hurt someone else.  However, very often, a young parent will find comfort in a book such as this, just as much as their child will.

I have loved the book Harriet the Spy since I was a kid, and when I heard there was going to be a movie about a blogging Harriet, I was ecstatic, and now, here it is!

Glee! And Yes, I'm Now a Gleekster. It's Official

I am a recent convert to Gleeksterism. My daughter has tried for a year now to get me interested in the series, but something held me back. I wasn't sure what it was then, but I know now: I KNEW, I just instinctively knew, that Glee was going to become such a part of my life, that I had to wait until I had sufficient time to absorb it all.

How much time did it take to hook me? I'd guess around ten minutes.

Let me put it this way: I own the complete Season One 7-disc set, and once I started watching, I could not stop until I'd seen all seven discs. It's a good thing I'm basically a vampire who stays up all night anyway. I was absorbed. I didn't even get up to refill my diet Coke or make popcorn.

Letters to God

Ordinarily, "faith based" movies are not my cup of tea, but I saw the trailer for this movie and it intrigued me. I read the synopsis and it intrigued me further. When this movie comes anywhere near where I live, I intend to be there, and I'm bringing my mother and my kids. If I can go on a night when my best friend Janice is free, I'm bringing her, too.

Synopsis:

A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, Letters to God is the story of what happens when one boy's walk of faith crosses paths with one man's search for meaning - the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.


Tyler Doherty (TANNER MAGUIRE) is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy.  Surrounded by a loving family and community, and armed with the courage of his faith, he faces his daily battle against cancer with bravery and grace.  To Tyler, God is a friend, a teacher, and the ultimate pen pal - Tyler's prayers take the form of letters, which he composes and mails on a daily basis.


The letters find their way into the hands of Brady McDaniels (JEFFREY S.S. JOHNSON), a beleaguered postman standing a ta crossroads in his life.  At first, he is confused and conflicted over what to do with the letters.  Over time, he begins to form a friendship with the Doherty family - getting to know not just Tyler but his touch, tender yet overwhelmed mom (ROBYN LIVELY), stalwart grandmother (MAREE CHEATHAM) and teen brother Ben (MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER BOLTEN) - who are each trying to stand strong against the doubts that come with the chaotic turn their lives have taken.


Moved by Tyler's courage, Brady realizes what he must do with the letters, a surprise decision that will transform his heart and uplift his newfound friends and community - in an exhilarating act of testament to the contagious effect of one boy's unwavering faith against the odds.


Inspired by a true story, Leetters to God is an intimate, moving and often funny story about the galvanizing effect one child's belief can have on his family, friends, and community.

Letters to God was written by Patrick Douglas, who also co-wrote the screenplay along with Art D'Alessandrom, Sandra Thrift, and Cullen Douglas.  I always have more faith in a book-based film if the original author is part of the screenwriting team.

Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days

I first became obsessed fascinated by Sesame Street long before I had children of my own - long before I was even all that fond of children, truth be known.  Kid shows were always pretty much the same back then, and they were usually local.

But this new show was different from all the others.  It was on PBS, which meant people all over the country were watching the same thing.  This new show included all kinds of children, not just little white children.  This new show also included all kinds of neighbors.  The adults in this new show didn't talk DOWN to children; they talked TO children, and not just about childish things, either.  I was so engrossed by this new Sesame Street show that I wrote my very first term paper about it!

Children are forced, as are we all, to live in a world populated by all sorts of people, and in which all kinds of things happen - good and bad.  A typical kid show of the era spoke only of good things, and the themes were usually some variation of "behave yourself" or "use good manners" - legitimate lessons, to be sure, but not what's foremost on a child's mind most days.

But this new show - this Sesame Street - it fascinated me.  It was. . . . interesting, even to a college gal.

Then, a few years later, I had kids of my own.  Every morning of the world, my daughter sat in her tiny little chair in front of our tiny little TV and watched - mesmerized - as children, adults, and puppets talked, sang, asked questions, got good answers, danced, and taught lessons most elementary teachers have been trying to teach for a million years.  Not only that: these lessons were LEARNED and REMEMBERED!

This fabulous DVD collection - which includes a small hardbound book that's also full of history and fun - was such a walk down memory lane for me. . . I'm loaning it to my daughter next week so she can sit - this time in a big chair - and remember these things, too.

We LOVED Buffy St. Marie and her tiny son; the scene where she was dipping him in the water and singing to him as she bathed him remains to this day one of our mutual favorites.

We loved how the adult relationships developed.  When Mr. Hooper died, this sad occurrence was dealt with rationally and wisely: people die, and we have to deal with it even if we're just little children.  Big Bird's grief was everyone's grief.  "You know, I'm gonna miss you, Mr. Hooper."  And so we all did.  And do.

(I did not know before that the wonderful Will Lee (Mr. Hooper) had been on Broadway and in many films and TV shows before being blacklisted during the infamous McCarthy era!)  (Makes me love him even more!)

On Sesame Street, as on every street in every neighborhood in every state in every nation, things changed and things stayed the same.  People grew up.  People got married.  People died.  People quarreled.  People made up, or didn't.  Sesame Street told it like it was, the bad as well as the good, in ways a child could understand and relate to.

I can remember LONG ago when Jim Henson and Kermit appeared on the Tonight Show.  It was the first time most people had ever seen either of them.  How awesome that such wondrous things were born from such a humble beginning!

This two-disc DVD set has made me cry and laugh out loud and THINK.  It's sent me down memory lane with a vengeance.

You don't have to have kids to love Sesame Street.  And if you DO have kids - even if they're grown and gone - you still need Sesame Street: 40 years of Sunny Days.  It'll make you young again.  Seriously.
